-- Piano Glossary & Index --
One of the first known stringed instruments was from Greece. It consisted of one single string stretched across a wooden soundboard. And because the bridge was movable, an exciting range of tones could be played and made to sound.
Many believed that these one stringed instruments were mixed up with the gods, somehow, and very powerful. Tones had many meanings.
Over the centuries, more strings were added and the bridge enlarged and even built into the soundboard. And then the invention of keyboards. Comes the Clavichord, comes the harpsichord, comes the piano-forte, comes the modern grand piano. What would the ancient Greeks think of a Steinway concert grand piano? The language of the gods, to say the least, would be greatly and profoundly expanded.
